Severna Park HS, defending 3A Maryland State Champions has moved up to 4A, this season. South River, 4A Champions 2 of the last 3 years, has not beaten Severna Park in the last 5 years. Defending 4A Champions, Quince Orchard, lost their top player Emily Ellenberger, to UMD Terps, and will be hard pressed to defend their crown.
Herndon Invitational is this weekend at Herndon High School(VA). The school has new Bermuda grass fields, to make for a much more attractive tournament. Tournament Organizer, Phyllis Pearce, expects a very competitive tournament with Lk Braddock, 2 times champion, being the team to beat!
BCC and Severna Park HS are headed to Pocomoke for a weekend tournament.
Michelle Schwartz is back in town after starting all 4 years in goal, as a Richmond Spider. Michelle coached for 1 season at Richmond. Michelle will be playing for local adult club DC Dragons. Michelle played for Severna Park HS, SParks, Tazmaniacs and Capitol Pegasus Club. Michelle and her twin sister, Emily(Towson Tiger), played on the Region 7 U16 team that won the USFHA NFC Championship.
Kelly McQuade takes over as Head Coach of Virginia Commonwealth University(VCU). Kelly served as Assistant Coach to Shelly Behrens, outgoing Head Coach, last season. Kelly is a 2004 graduate of William & Mary.
Shannon Karl is the lead assistant at VCU. Shannon was a Washington Post All Met Player of the Year at Centreville HS/VA. Represented Region 8 at the USFHA National Futures Championship, Rampage Club and played for William & Mary. Mother, Starr, was USA High School Coach of the Year at Centreville High School.
Brett Dunn is the new goalkeeper coach at VCU. Brett coached at our MavSports winter league at Dulles and Rockville. He is on the USA Indoor National Team. Brett attended Fairfax HS/VA.
Georgetown U is playing all their home games at College Park this season.
Nate Franks is the new assistant coach at American University. Nate attended Sidwell Friends in Washington DC, and like Steve Jennings, AU Head Coach, developed a taste for the game along the way. Nate had a tough going of it, as he was forced to stop playing in rec games on several occasions because of complaints from parents. Nate became a volunteer coach for Sidwell and Tazmaniacs Club. He went on to college at Princeton and made the USA National men team practice squad.
Sidwell Friends, Alma Mater of Nate Franks, is one of the more prominent high schools in Washington DC. Alumni include Nancy Reagan, Charles Lindbergh, Root Boy Slim, Gora Vidal, Chelsea Clinton, Albert Gore, Allan Hoover(son of J Edgar Hoover), Tricia Nixon, Archibald Roosevelt(son of Teddy R), Valerie Rumsfeld, Dawn Rather, Benee Morris( Daughter of Boyz II Men singer Wanya Morris)
Trivia James Madison U has the Walls triplets, Radford U has the Wisniewski twins and VCU has the van Dessel twins!
